As of the 2010 Census, its population was 45,000.  (21K in 1930, 21K in 1850).  It includes 4 towns (Bell Buckle pop 500, Normandy pop 141, Shelbyville pop 20K, Wartrace pop 651) and 16 unincorporated communities.

Shelbyville was laid out in 1810 and incorporated in 1819 as the county seat.  The town is host to the Tennessee Walking Horse industry.  It is also known as "Pencil City" due to its history of manufacturing wood-cased pencils.  These days, Sharpies are made there!
