John

John was one of two surviving children to David Manaku (1853-1890) and "Rose" Rosina Kaleionehu Moanauli (1864-after1900). The 1900 census said Rose had given birth to 8 children, only two of which survived:

1. John Manaku (1882-1936) m 1901 Rose Kealohapauole Iopa (1882-1931)
2. David Manaku (1886-aft1918)

In 1900, John was a painter.

Rose

Rose was one of five children of Kealoha Iopa (1848- aft 1935)and Namilimili Haia (about 1850-before 1920)

1. Kaui Iopa (1875-1915) Was a day laborer, and widowed at the time of his death (age 40).
2. Laie (1876-??)  There's a Laie on FamilySearch and a Nellie who died in Laie with a name that might work out for this family, but it's unclear at this point
3. Arthur Kaupalolo Iopa (1878-1973) Listed on FamilySearch, but I see no documents for him, either.
4. Rose Iopa (1882-1931) m 1901 John Manaku (1882-1936) Living with Kaui in 1900 next door to the parents.
5. Keahi Iopa (1891-1920)  m1. 1905 Joseph Keolanui (??-??) m2. John Aki (1898-??)

John and Rose were married 10 Feb 1901.

5. Daniel Iopa Manaku (1915-1915)
6. Iopa Manaku (1917-1917)

8. Daniel Iopa Manaku (1923-1972)

Census Records
1900 Census

John is 18, working as a painter. He lives with his parents, who are listed very generically as Mr and Mrs C Kane.

1910 Census

John and Rosy have been married 11 years, and their 4 children (of 4 pregnancies!) live with them on Buckle Lane in Honolulu. John works as an inspector with the board of health.

John lost an 8 month old baby in 1915 called Daniel Iopa Manaku.

In 1917 they lost another infant boy they called Iopa Manaku.

1917 Draft Registration.
John listed his address at 171 Dowsett, Honolulu, and occupation as a cooper at Matson Nav Company. He's listed as medium height and stocky build.

1920 Census
In addition to their previous 4 (John, Kealoha, Rosina, Emily), they had another baby boy, David. John is now listed working at the wharf as a laborer.

1930 Census
By 1930, John and Rose added a sixth, a boy named Daniel. John had passed away (I think), but the remaining 4 kids are living with Shige and Rose (Kealoha...) and their two kids. Also, Kealoha Iopa (grandfather) lives at the house on Akepo Lane, Honolulu.

He's still working down at the docks, while his daughters are Pineapple Factory girls, and Shige works at the auto shop.
