David Manaku and Rosina Kaleionehu Moanauli (couple 3)

[Jen's paternal GGGrandparents]
[Mervyn Ishihara > Rose Manaku > John Manaku > Parents]

David Manaku
BIRTH:  About 1853
DEATH: 24 April 1890, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

Rosina Kaleionehu Moanauli
BIRTH: about 1864
DEATH: after 1900

David Manaku David was the son of unknown parents.

Rosina K. Moanauli
Rosina was the daughter J Moanauli (??-1883) and Namoomoo (??-about 1875).

Her father had another daughter with Mahole (bef1860-aft1892), who was named Kalanikapu (??-bet 1887/1892, died age 14 and unmarried).

This remarriage and some uncertainty about property deeds caused some probate court woes between Rosina and her step-mother Mahole, as described  here.
(Brief: His widow Mahole was supposed to inherited a portion of his estate, along with her sister Hanaia, according to one deed.  The will/deed the executor had provided property to Rosina, along with Kalanikapu's share, as she had passed away.)  Kalanikapu's guardian was Cecil Brown (lawyer).  Estate was settled 21 Sept 1887, but the appeal was about 1891/2.

Life Together
David and "Rose" were the parents of two known children, though the 1900 census said she had given birth to 8 children, only two of which survived:

1. John Manaku (1882-1936) m 1901 Rose Kealohapauole Iopa (1882-1931)
2. David Manaku (1886-aft1918)

The son David may have left the island to go to Chicago (at the time of the WW I Draft).

There's a death record for David the father in 1890.  Rose remarried a C Kane (most likely "Charles").

The 1900 Census, indicates that
  • John and David's mother went by "Mrs C Kane" though the sons went by the last name Manaku.
  • The Previous page lists the head of house as C Kane, born June 1863 (36 years old) and he was a laborer.
  • She was 47 at the time of the Census, and was just married 1 year to Mr. Kane.
  • She was the mother of 8 children, only two of which were living as of 1900.
  • John(18) was a painter, while David (14) was at school.
There is an obituary for John W Moanauli posted here, which may be Rosina's half-brother.  It says he was the son of Kainapau, the first cousin of the kaukau alii Naihe of Kohala, and his mother was Namoomoo, who was a kaukau alii from Kohala. (These indicate leaders of the community.)

More on the "lesser chiefs" here.

A bit on the ancient history of the caste system in Hawaii here.

This particular John married Mrs Henry A Beers of Honolulu in 1881.  He was stepfather to four children.
