BIRDS.

I love birds.
(Unless they are seagulls. In which case, I do not love birds. I want to kick birds in the face when birds are seagulls)

And since Blake needs things to focus on and look at when he's in his crib (we're still working on eye strength for him), I decided to make a mobile.

Well, technically, I made the birds and helped Joe sew them to their perches....but Joe was the one who made it a mobile. My brain just doesn't work that way. I could sew birds, but balance them? Not so much. Ian gathered the sticks--I think he did a great job, don't you?

(Shhhhh. The baby is sleeping in his car seat).

(And don't mind that little purple bird at the bottom that doesn't want to sit still.)

Babies are supposed to have mobiles and other brain-stimulating things slightly to their right over their crib--maximizes stimulation, so they say. So we have stuff "to the right" whichever way he's sleeping. Blake is also still at the age where he's attracted to bright, contrasting colors--which is why I chose the fabrics I did. (Bonus: fat quarters were on sale for $0.99! Ka-ching!)

Bird pattern can be found here.
Note: Don't think for one minute that I hand-sewed those (as the pattern suggests).
Had I done so, my fingers would be bloody stumps by now.
I'm terrible at hand-sewing.

  1. You sewed those!? That is so impressive!

I hate - HATE - pigeons. Hate them. Would kill them all for fun.

  2. wow.

That is the coolest mobile I've EVER seen! Love the sticks, the arrangement, and the colors. What a well-made family project (although I'm pretty sure your part took the most time/effort, Jen!!--they look so great!)!!

  5. The fact that you sewed them at all (hand or otherwise) amazes me.

I hate birds. All birds. I suppose I could put up with a few that sing pretty songs...as long as it's not outside my window before I plan on being awake.

Liz, I'm with you. Pigeons are rats with wings.

  6. You almost make me want to make one. Almost. Until I remember that it's hotter than blazes and I don't want to sew. But yours is cute. Don't come to my house and look if it ends up missing.
