Enter:
STAYCATION

We've been sitting on this for a while.
But today was the day.

In thinking about what we wanted to do for Ian for his 5th birthday (fifth!?),
it all came down to one thing:
Ian hates it when Joe goes to work on Monday mornings.

So we thought it would be fun for Joe to take Ian's Birthday Week off...
...but we didn't tell Ian.

Until today.

Today, we whipped out our 'Ian's Staycation' chart
(I'm geeky like that)
And gave him more than 20 choices of things we can do this week.

(I think Joe looks so professorial, don't you?)

And Ian made his choices:

Monday
Make sock puppets
Go out for hot cocoa
Buy a pet fish (eeee!)
{dentist appointment for Ian}
{physical therapy for Blake}

Tuesday
Bake with Mom
Go Geocaching with Dad

Wednesday
Make root beer
Go sledding

Thursday
Liquid Fireworks and Ice Cream

Friday
Swimming and spending the night at a fancy hotel

Saturday
Have 2 friends over to play

Sunday
Make ice cream
Play board games
Birthday Dinner!

Monday
Go snow shoeing

Joe and I have been looking forward to this for months...It's been hard keeping a secret from Ian for so long--especially on those sad Monday mornings when Ian gets weepy that his dad is going to work.....and OH! Side note: Ian's birthday dinner request? Pancakes, homemade pizza, cucumbers and broccoli. That's my boy.

  1. That is about the coolest think I have ever heard of. Spencer is talking Dad into taking his birthday off.

  2. I'm so excited that you've shared the details on this--it is such a cool & fun idea and you guys took it to the NEXT LEVEL with the chart. Seriously? AWESOME!!!

I hope we can do something like this in our future...maybe even this year if it could work out (since the other two of J's birthdays were heavily overshadowed by moving to another state!!).

    SEriously. Awesome.
Can't wait to hear more about your adventures.

    Good choosing, Ian

    AND! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

  7. I love this idea! Last night I dreamed (dreamt?) that you ALSO included in your week of fun a hot air balloon ride that Joe was piloting (and I think you made the envelope- the balloon part) and it was a Special Shape balloon and it was AWESOME. I said something like "wow, you guys really are over the top with this" as you were landing on the balcony of a two story home that I have never seen before to pick up Ian. And you know, I wouldn't be surprised.
