Walden Pond

In an attempt to squeeze as much outdoor time as possible from the ensuing autumn season, a friend and I took our kids to Walden Pond (yes, that Walden Pond) to play at the beach and wade in the water. It was a beautiful day--Ian did not want to leave. =)

  1. Looks like a good day. An empty beach that probably doesn't smell of pee or goose pooh and the lovely pond in the back ground. Hooray for Walden days.

  2. I love Walden Pond. I love it more with Ian enjoying it. Walden Pond is HUGE. I wondered how it could be called a POND. Are there guidelines for such a thing? When does a pond become a lake? I think about things like that....sheesh. It was one of the more shocking moments of my life to see how large it was.

  4. Linda, that's a very interesting question, a group of us were just talking about that the other day... When does...... Maybe our Joe can answer that for us.....

  5. Yes, Joseph can probably research it and find the answer OR make something up that is believable!

  6. After some investigation, it appears that there is no standard definition. So if I were to propose my own, based upon my own experience, I would say that a pond is an small enclosed body of water without an outlet. (It doesn't fit all cases, naturally, since people who name bodies of water don't always keep to rules!) New England folks use the term "small" loosely, and have ponds that are several acres in size. Walden pond is a kettle pond, left from the ice age.
