Jesse Edward Breeden was born 16 February 1839 in a farming household. His father, James (1808-after 1880), was originally from South Carolina, but like so many of Tennessee's early settlers, had moved west with the growth of the country and upon hearing of the plentiful arable land in West Tennessee. He was already in Stewart County on a 150 acre farm by 1840. His mother Frances (1812-1850) was from Tennessee. So far, I have him as one of 4 children (just from the 1860 census, born between 1828 and 1845... given the times, chances are good there were more that died in their childhood.)
In 1839, he's recorded as being born at Erin, at the northernmost part of Houston county, which is right on the southern border with Stewart County. The 1860 and 1870 Census says the were living in the 5th District of Stewart County, Tennessee (the Tennessee side just east of Land Between the Lakes, or where the notch is in the northern boundary), but in the Erin, Houston postal district. To have affiliations with both counties, sounds rural to me! He was a Private in Tennessee's 14th Regiment, Company F, for the Confederate States of America, and his regiment lived through some very harrowing battles of the Civil War. The 14th Regiment was under General Lee's command when they surrendered at Appomatox Courthouse, Virginia. He owned a little land in 1870, about $200 worth of real estate and $438 worth of personal estate. Sounds like they owned the house, but not any farm land. Even still, he was a farmer.
Anyway, in 20 November 1862, amid the flurry of the war, he went to Humphreys County (next county south, Waverly is the county seat) to get married to Sarah Elizabeth Anderson. The compiled service records state that Jesse was on the rolls in 1862, so it's likely that immediately after his marriage, he left with his Company.
Sarah was born 6 November 1844 in Williamson, Tennessee, United States (according to the death record of her son, James Priestley Breeden). Possibly the daughter of John Anderson (farmer from VA) and N. D. Anderson (TN) in Williamson County (1850 Census).
They had 4 children on record. Elbert Octavis (1863-1941), Nancy Adah (1865-1886), Mary Alice (1868-1955), and James Priestley (1875-1926), all of whom we expect were born near Erin, Houston County.
Sarah died on 9 August 1892 in Erin, Houston, Tennessee, and it's likely that upon her death, he moved in with his son's family. The 1900 Census reflects that he was a widower, and was living in the same household as his son James Priestley and family in Weakley County. He died on 1 December 1904 at Weakley County, Tennessee.
He enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in Co.F, 14th Tennessee Infantry (see here fore more information) under the command of Col. William A. FORBES and Captain W. LOWE. This regiment was organized at Camp Duncan in Montgomery Co., Tennessee in May 1861 and officially accepted into Confederate service on June 6th. In July 1861 they were sent to Virginia and placed into a brigade under General Sam R. ANDERSON. The regiment took part in the battles of West Point, Echo, Bolton's Bridge, Seven Pines, Gaines Mills, Cedar Run, 2nd Manassas, Propect Hill, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Bristoe Station, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and the Seige of Petersburg. On 9 April 1865, the regiment was with General LEE when he surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia.He began in company F (Men from Stewart County), then once that company was weakened due to casualties, the 32 remaining men as of 23 May 1863 were transferred from F to Company E.

Census Review, Jesse Breeden
1860: Living with his parents James and Frances in Stewart county with 3 of his siblings
1862: 14th Regiment, Company F, Tennessee Confederate Infantry records a Jesse E. Breeden (this Regiment was out of Clarksville, so it's possible, but the Jesse E. Breeden was listed as 25, and we think ours was only 23 at that point...)
1870: Living in Stewart county still, now with his wife, three kids, and sister-in-law. They were next door to a James Breeden (age 54, his dad would have been 62. Error, or a cousin?) and wife Sarah (25) with two young sons. Also down the street is Isham Breeden (38) and wife Elizabeth (35) and their 3 children. Perhaps a brother or cousin?
1880: Dad (72) had married a woman 24 years his Junior, Louisa Jane Dowdy (48.) Jesse and Sarah have their 4 kids, Elbert Octavis (1863), Nancy Adah (1864), Mary Alice (1868), James Priestley (1875) living in the 8th Civil District of Houston County. Jesse E. is still next door to Isam and Elizabeth, with their son James (22) and son C M (19) living with them. Also up the street: Joseph N (38) and wife Martha J (36), and their 5 kids.
1900: By 1900, Jesse is widowed, living with his son James Priestley in Weakley County, Tennessee in Civil District 17.
The Last Story of Jesse Breeden
Obeira, James P's daughter, was 7 years old when her grandfather, Jessie died. A hired hand was eating breakfast with the family and said " Where is Jessie this morning? He must be dead if he's not up yet." in a jocular fashion. Obeira went to his bedroom and came back in the kitchen and said "Grandpa Breeden IS dead!"
