It's no secret that we have bugs in our house. It's sort of par for the course when you live in place that has warm, humid summers. Ants, spiders...you name it, we have it.
As a result, I learned long ago that I needed to pay a lot of attention to the food in my kitchen...which also means that I have to have a very regimented cupboard-clean-out routine. (Yeah, it's about as exciting as it sounds.)
This year, though, has been buggier than most. So I had to take my kitchen maintenance schedule to new levels. (Yipee.) Everything (and I mean everything) went into mason jars, unless otherwise in a screw-on container. And after a few months of trying to figure out the visual difference between millet and amaranth and (if operating on a quick, cursory glance) oat groats and barley and arborio rice, I needed a new solution. But after picking up some chalkboard paint, problem solved!
Bonus: filling my cupboards with mason jars is uber pretty and Sticks It To The Product Packaging Man. Win-Win.
I love it!
ReplyDeleteI think I need to take some cooking lessons from you because I wouldn't know what to do with half of that stuff!
ReplyDeleteAhhh...New England. You forgot to mention the dread pantry moth. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteLove this idea. Very clever! Can we hang out sometime?
It IS pretty Jen -- how clever you are, to figure out this but also to know how to use all of that:)
ReplyDeleteBeu-ti-FULL!
ReplyDeleteOooohh! I love it. I've got all my grains in little bags from Good Earth. I've got to copy your ingenious plan. Where do you get chalkboard paint?
ReplyDeleteOh, and could you send me a good amaranth recipe?? I keep trying it, but it just always tastes like hay.
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm..... bugs. It's Pandora to blame. At the moment, it's the bugs in my garden that make me spit! What does one do with 4inch horn worms as big around as my thumb..... you say feed them to the chickens... ah well, even they turn their noses up! Don't count on any tomatoes from mum this year!!
ReplyDeleteThat is beautiful!!! I love the chalkboard paint idea as well!
ReplyDeleteWe're a mason jar storage family as well...but the chalkboard paint is what I need to do next. And I think I actually have some...
