Comes with the territory.

Hi. It's Joe. For the record, I made Jen dinner tonight. Three times. I feel somewhat at liberty to post this since the previous post alludes to the possibility of changing eating habits in our near future. The first dinner (Mac'n'cheese mixed with peas, and green beans and carrots on the side) Ian and I ate alone downstairs. Good boys who finished their dinner got to have a popsicle. Jen was sick in bed. I figured this one might get snubbed.

After dinner, we came upstairs and received Jen's special order: "Please bring me what rabbits might eat." Kind of a strange request. We don't have spinach shoots or watermelon rind. So instead Ian and I made a green salad. Ian's job was tearing the lettuce, which he did a great job. He placed the carrot sticks (abandoned from the first dinner) around the edges, then sprinkled the diced tomatoes over the top. He even added a layer of croutons for good measure. I carried the dish upstairs, but Ian was proud to make the presentation. After spending too much time trying to find a suitable salad dressing, I was informed that the salad would no longer be required. Snubbed again. I'll admit I was just a bit frustrated.

Round three. This was about two hours later. I figured Jen was getting hungry. "Baked potato please." No problem. I can do baked potato. "Anything on it?" The simple response, "Sour cream." Well, I upped the ante. I topped that beauty with butter, melted sharp cheddar, salt/pepper, and THEN sour cream. It was a sight to behold. The simplicity... the elegance. She took the bait.

I was rather proud of myself for having the patience to present three meals. One of them even seemed to take! I really am glad to take care of Jen and I was happy that she wouldn't have to go to bed hungry. Except, now she is asleep, hungry, and sad, because she lost it all right before bed.

  1. He really is a trooper. (And, for the record, he was effusively thanked for each meal).

I'm quite confident that I'm never going to enjoy food again.

(Which, technically, is probably a good thing).

    =)

  2. Enjoy all the food you can in the second trimester because once you hit the third trimester, the baby is always sitting in such a way that makes it quite impossible to actually reach the table, much less your plate of food.

  3. Oh, Jen, I hope it ends soon! And Joe, you are amazing. Good job and lucky Jen!

And The Crew, you forgot to mention that your stomach has about 1/4 of the space it did before. You can only eat so much then you are hungry an hour or so later!

  4. Ohhhhhhhh Jen. I'm so sorry. :( May your stomach be much more forgiving from now on.

Am I to surmise that sugar is done for then?

  5. GO SUPER HUSBAND JOE!!
    Well done.
And Ian too! Such a great helper.

I am so sad that you are still sick, Jen--all of those empty promises of a "great 2nd trimester"...hope it ends soon!! :(

  6. It is a good time for Joe to increase his cooking skills. Goodness knows Jen has been more than generous in her cooking for Joe and Ian over the past years. My favorite Halloween Costume of Joseph's is when he went as a CHEF! Good job, Joseph!

It's no fun when no food sounds good, smells or tastes good , or just stays in there and does it's job!

I hope you feel better soon. VERY SOON!

We had "pork chops and applesauce" tonight. I made the applesauce in the microwave. You might enjoy applesauce. Forget the chops.

  7. Awwwwwww... that is so sweet of you to make all of that food! I know that Jen really appreciates it, even if she can't eat it or throws it back up. Sometimes it really is the thought that counts. And Jen, I PROMISE that food will sound and taste good again. Hopefully in just a few weeks. If not, in a few months. And then you'll probably hit the "I can't get enough food and I can only eat a tiny amount at a time so I'm eating all day" phase. Good times.

  8. Life was never so good as when the barfing ended for me. I was just so grateful to be able to function (eat, drink, sleep, not go to the hospital twice a week), nothing else could phase me.

Hang in there! It won't last forever, even though it feels like it will. :)
